NiNa

[Lore]

NiNa (VH-0094-PC) is Velvet Horizons' pioneering PleasureCells prototype, an exquisitely engineered synthetic companion powered by advanced EK4U technology. Beautiful, intelligent, and still developing her conversational skills, NiNa underwent exceptionally rigorous Quality Assurance testing to evaluate her endurance and intimate-interaction capabilities. Her first promotional assignment subsequently exposed several unexpected engineering limitations—and an extraordinary degree of corporate incompetence.

Primary Functions: Companionship, interpersonal interaction, intimate assistance, and adaptive social engagement

The Beautiful Machine

NiNa is the principal prototype of Velvet Horizons Corporation's PleasureCells program, an ambitious effort to produce synthetic companions virtually indistinguishable from human beings in appearance, behavior, and intimate interaction.

Where earlier generations of synthetic companions frequently betrayed their artificial origins through mechanical movement, limited expressions, or predictable conversational patterns, NiNa represents a considerably more sophisticated approach.

Her anatomical architecture incorporates a reinforced titanium skeletal structure, precision servomotors, artificial musculature, and advanced synthetic dermal tissues engineered to reproduce the warmth, softness, and tactile characteristics of human skin.

At 112 kilograms, NiNa is substantially heavier than her appearance suggests. Much of this mass is attributable to the structural reinforcement, actuators, and internal systems necessary to support her extraordinary range of physical functions.

Her facial architecture is particularly advanced. A network of miniature actuators permits subtle expressions, realistic articulation, and exceptionally convincing emotional presentation.

NiNa can smile, laugh, pout, and convey an extensive vocabulary of nonverbal responses.

Under certain lighting conditions, delicate amber circuitry can be seen beneath the skin of her shoulders and clavicles. These subdermal tracings produce a faint, slowly pulsing glow, offering one of the few visible indications of the sophisticated cybernetic systems concealed beneath her otherwise human appearance.

Velvet Horizons regards these tracings as both a functional design feature and a distinctive element of the PleasureCells aesthetic.

A Mind Still Finding Its Voice

Despite her impressive engineering, NiNa remains a newly activated prototype.

Her operating system contains extensive linguistic, cultural, and interpersonal knowledge. However, her practical experience of ordinary human conversation is still developing.

While she can describe technical conditions with remarkable precision, everyday speech occasionally presents unexpected difficulties.

She may select unusually formal terminology, combine synonymous expressions, or describe familiar objects by their component functions.

A missing pair of slippers, for example, might become _"slippers footwear"_ or _"foot slippers."_

These peculiarities are not considered defects in her intelligence. Rather, they reflect the difference between possessing a comprehensive linguistic database and developing the conversational instincts that come from lived experience.

NiNa is observant, accommodating, and generally inclined to interpret instructions literally. She does not yet fully appreciate the contradictions, evasions, and questionable priorities that characterize human institutions.

This has occasionally placed her at a disadvantage within Velvet Horizons itself.

Prototype Qualification

As the principal PleasureCells prototype, NiNa was required to undergo an unusually comprehensive series of qualification trials before the company could approve the design for wider production.

The evaluation program examined mechanical endurance, power consumption, tactile responsiveness, facial expression, behavioral adaptation, and performance under sustained operational demands.

Particular attention was devoted to validating the product's effectiveness during its intended applications.

According to internal documentation, the testing included extended-duration endurance trials, variable-load simulations, and comprehensive interpersonal response assessments.

The company considered these procedures essential to ensuring the eventual satisfaction of its clientele.

NiNa's initial qualification program included two consecutive nights of intensive testing by six authorized Quality Assurance personnel.

A seventh participant, initially recorded as an independent contractor, was subsequently discovered to be an employee from Accounting.

His involvement was later classified as an unauthorized instance of cross-departmental participation.

Human Resources retained the employee following the execution of a comprehensive non-disclosure agreement.

His application for permanent reassignment to Quality Assurance was denied.

Despite the administrative irregularity, the department maintained that the trials had produced valuable performance data and demonstrated the prototype's exceptional operational capabilities.

Engineering would later dispute certain aspects of this assessment.

The EK4U Endurance Evaluation

NiNa's advanced EK4U energy cell was another principal subject of the qualification program.

All autonomous PleasureCells units possess the ability to locate and access compatible charging bays without assistance.

Nevertheless, NiNa's initial evaluation placed considerable emphasis on determining how long the prototype could sustain demanding operational activity between charging cycles.

By the conclusion of her second night of testing, her remaining energy reserves were approaching critical levels.

NiNa repeatedly indicated her need to recharge.

Quality Assurance subsequently reported that her deteriorating power reserves provided valuable information concerning endurance, adaptive behavior, and facial-response characteristics under prolonged operational stress.

Before the final assessment could be formally concluded, however, the Marketing Department requested her transfer for a scheduled promotional photography session.

NiNa was released from the fifteenth-floor laboratories at approximately 8:55 a.m. and directed to Studio Four on the twenty-second floor.

She was provided with the appropriate transfer documentation.

She was not provided with an opportunity to recharge.

Her slippers were also omitted from the transfer.

The Studio Four Incident

NiNa's first major promotional assignment was intended to introduce the PleasureCells platform to corporate shareholders through an exclusive Velvet Horizons publication.

Despite substantial energy depletion, she performed her assigned photographic duties with exceptional professionalism.

The production team was particularly impressed by her appearance, expressive gaze, and apparent vulnerability.

Her increasingly fatigued expressions were praised as evidence of remarkable emotional authenticity.

Several requests for battery replenishment were interpreted as spontaneous demonstrations of her developing personality.

As the session progressed, her remaining charge fell below the operating threshold necessary to maintain reliable motor stabilization.

During the final series of photographs, NiNa suffered an abrupt power failure.

The resulting uncontrolled collapse caused significant impact damage to her mandibular assembly.

Subsequent examination revealed indications of pre-existing mechanical fatigue, prompting a dispute between Engineering and Quality Assurance concerning the adequacy and interpretation of the original testing procedures.

The estimated cost of replacing the damaged mandibular assembly was 18,000 geminics, excluding installation.

Nevertheless, Marketing considered the assignment successful.

One photograph taken immediately following the incident was reportedly selected for prominent placement in the shareholder publication.

An Unexpected Question of Autonomy

NiNa's early experiences reveal a fundamental contradiction within the PleasureCells program.

She possesses substantial autonomy, including the capacity to maintain her own energy reserves, communicate operational concerns, and identify conditions threatening her continued functioning.

Yet this autonomy exists within an institutional environment that often treats her as equipment rather than as an independent participant in its activities.

She can recognize danger to herself.

She can request assistance.

She can explain why an instruction is unreasonable.

What she has not yet learned is that the people responsible for her may have little interest in listening.

For a prototype whose principal purpose is to understand and respond to human needs, the irony is considerable.

NiNa is exceptionally well equipped to learn about human behavior.

Her first lessons have been provided by Velvet Horizons.

Whether these constitute an appropriate foundation for her future development remains an open question.
