Type: Jersey Devil plushie
Residence: Jettyroot, Hoshihara
Status: Household member, emotional-support cryptid, unofficial parenting prototype
First appearance: The Jersey Devil Incident
Known sound: SQUEAK.
Savyn is a battered little Jersey Devil plushie brought home from Giuseppe’s after what was supposed to be an ordinary supply run to the Whitespring Refuge.
He is made from faded reddish fabric, stitched together in deliberately crude sections, with curled horns, small ragged bat wings, stubby clawed feet, a tufted tail, and enormous glassy red eyes that make him look permanently startled by whatever questionable decision is happening around him. His body is soft but visibly worn, as though he had already survived several adventures before finding his way to Jettyroot.
When squeezed, Savyn squeaks.
This feature is abused constantly.
How he became Savyn
Sable noticed him first.
More accurately, Sable insisted she did not notice him first.
She disliked him immediately, which was unfortunate because she also picked him up, inspected him for “structural defects,” squeezed him, discovered that he squeaked, and ultimately failed to put him down with any meaningful conviction.
Ravyn purchased him.
Sable objected.
Sable then carried him home.
By the time the two reached a quiet window overlooking Appalachia, the plushie already belonged to them.
His name came together almost accidentally:
Sable + Ravyn = Savyn
The pronunciation also carries the joke that the poor creature had “needed savin’” after briefly being threatened with demotion to Floor Mop Junior during an entirely unnecessary jealousy incident.
The name stuck immediately.
Personality
Savyn does not technically possess a personality.
Nobody at Jettyroot behaves as though this matters.
He is generally treated as innocent, observant, mildly judgmental, and remarkably tolerant of being dragged into domestic arguments that have nothing whatsoever to do with him.
His enormous eyes make him particularly useful as a silent witness.
When placed somewhere inappropriate, Savyn appears accusatory.
When held during an argument, he appears concerned.
When Sable hugs him, he appears smug.
When Ravyn squeezes him repeatedly—
SQUEAK.
Savyn has never formally complained.
Place in the household
Savyn began as a souvenir.
He became family almost immediately.
He can usually be found somewhere around the living areas of Jettyroot, although his exact location tends to change depending on who last carried him. He has been left on chairs, counters, beds, shelves, beside coffee mugs, and in positions suggesting that somebody deliberately arranged him to watch another household member sleep.
Nobody admits to doing this.
Savyn occupies a strange role between stuffed toy, mascot, household relic, and adopted child.
Ravyn has jokingly referred to him as the dry run for future parenthood.
Sable initially objected to this description.
She then became noticeably protective of him.
This has not helped her argument.
Relationship with Sable
Sable maintains that Savyn is hideous.
She has also been observed:
holding him against her chest,
straightening one of his horns,
moving him away from dirty surfaces,
and becoming defensive when his continued physical integrity was threatened.
Her official position therefore remains unreliable.
Savyn appears to have won.
Relationship with Ravyn
Ravyn bought Savyn largely because Sable very obviously wanted him while very obviously insisting that she did not.
He continues to exploit this victory.
Savyn is frequently used as an accomplice in teasing Sable, particularly because the plushie’s squeaker can interrupt conversations at strategically irritating moments.
Ravyn also treats Savyn with genuine affection beneath the jokes.
He is the one who helped give him his name.
Relationship with K’hraal
Undetermined.
For Savyn’s sake, supervised contact is recommended.
Historical significance
Savyn is one of those small Jettyroot objects that carries much more history than its appearance suggests.
He represents a completely ordinary day in the wasteland: two people going out for supplies, arguing over screws, teasing each other, buying something stupid, laughing too loudly in a place that survived the end of the world, and eventually taking another unnecessary thing home because it made life slightly better.
That is essentially Jettyroot.
Nothing about Savyn is important to the survival of Appalachia.
Which is precisely why he matters.
In a world obsessed with survival, Savyn is evidence that Tony and Sable still have room for affection, silliness, attachment, and things that serve absolutely no practical purpose.
Except squeaking.
SQUEAK.
かわいい (kawaii). Ridiculous little bastard. 💜
